For 1 in 5 children living in poverty worldwide, many of these simple necessities and
rights are out of reach. Instead, their life is incredibly challenging, with the risk of
illiteracy, disease, child labour, lifelong poverty and even death.
Islamic Relief has been supporting families and orphaned children affected by war,
poverty, and ill-health for over 40 years. Through our Orphan Sponsorship Programme,
we are currently supporting over 85,000 orphaned children to look forward to a better
future.

Your sponsorship provides holistic, long-term support, including safe learning
spaces, quality education, nutritious meals, psychosocial care, medical attention, and
assistance for the child’s family, helping them break the cycle of poverty.
A regular donation of R1200 every month provides medical care for an orphan, their
siblings or guardian, exactly when it is most needed. This monthly donation also
supports education, nutrition, safe spaces for play, and ongoing psychosocial care,
ensuring a child’s overall wellbeing and development.

This enables us to cover the cost of emergency care, travel to hospitals,
prescriptions, and medical equipment such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, and eyewear.
These funds also help orphans affected by chronic and long-term illnesses such as
asthma and diabetes. Your contribution ensures we can respond immediately to
emergencies and critical needs, wherever the child is.

Lamis: A Childhood Lost to War
Before the escalation in Palestine in October 2023, Lamis was a bright and active
nine-year-old in good health. However, after enduring the trauma of repeated
bombardment and being displaced six times within a year, she has become aggressive,
stubborn, less active, and increasingly withdrawn, often sleeping for long hours.
Lamis dreams of the crisis ending so she can return to school and reunite with her
friends. “I miss my home, my room, and my toys,” she says. “I dream of not hearing the
sounds of rockets and shells and sleeping peacefully.”
